Instant Karma, featuring Green Day's cover of Working Class Hero, can be heard now on MTV.com's "The Leak".

MTV.com - The Leak: Various Artists 'Instant Karma'

Launched Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Beyond his well-documented contributions to the musical canon, in life and death, John Lennon remains a symbol of peace. It is apt then that a selection of some of his greatest songs are the basis for Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur, a compilation being released June 12 to support Amnesty International's campaign to focus attention and mobilize activism around the crisis in the Sudan: genocide at the hands of the Janjaweed militias -- bands of fighters backed by the Sudanese government -- a campaign of violence that began in February 2003.

The album was led by Green Day's interpretation of Lennon's "Working Class Hero," the Samuel Bayer-directed video for which premiered exclusively on MTV.

"We wanted to do 'Working Class Hero' because its themes of alienation, class, and social status really resonated with us," says Green Day singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong on Amnesty International's http://www.instantkarma.org site. "It's such a raw, aggressive song... we felt we could really sink our teeth into it. I hope we've done him justice.

The set also includes U2's cover of "Instant Karma," Christina Aguilera's spin on "Mother," R.E.M.'s rendition of "#9 Dream," the Cure tackling "Love," Snow Patrol doing "Isolation" and "Power to the People" performed by the Black Eyed Peas.

Rounding out Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur are Lennon covers by the likes of Aerosmith (with The Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars), Lenny Kravitz, Los Lonely Boys, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jakob Dylan, Jackson Browne, Avril Lavigne, Big & Rich, Youssou N'Dour, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, Matisyahu, Postal Service, Jaguares, Flaming Lips, Jack's Mannequin (featuring Mick Fleetwood) and Regina Spektor.

In addition to spreading awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, the project also encourages individuals to take a stand by putting their name to Amnesty International's global petition, which declares, "as a citizen of the world, I demand and end to the killing and mass atrocities in Darfur, Sudan."

Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur is available for purchase June 12, but can be heard here on "The Leak" on MTV.com for a full week prior to its release. While listening to some of the most profound music by one of the 20th Century's most revered artists covered by a selection of superstars and up-and-coming artists, visit mtvU's comprehensive Darfur Web site, http://darfurisdying.com to learn more about the crisis and what you can do.

Green Day Punks Up 'Simpsons' Theme Song @ Billboard :here.

Message from Brian........

I just wanted to take a minute and thank everyone at the Green Day camp for inviting me down to the American Idol finale taping at the Kodak Theater in luscious Hollywood, California. An extra special thanks goes to Adrienne and Billie Joe Armstrong, Bill Schneider, Pat Magnarella, and Doug Goodman.  The show was amazing, the seats were awesome ( I was sitting next to Teri Hatcher, Jerry Springer, Brittany Murphy, and David Hasselhoff ) and the performances were incredible. The only disappointing moment came when Ryan Seacrest announced GREEN DAY and instead of seeing Billie Joe, Mike and Tre appear from behind a curtain like so many performers before them ( Joe Perry, Smokey Robinson, Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Ruben Studdard, Taylor Hicks ) I saw a video monitor of Green Day performingWorking Class Hero that was taped 3 hours prior to the start of the so-called LIVE show. Apparently FOX wouldn't allow Green Day to do their performance live, even though there was a several second time delay for the east coast feed and an over 3 hour time delay for the west coast ( not to mention an entire team of censors waiting to hit the dump button on the Lennon lyrics. ) ,
I'm just glad Fox didn't plan the after party, instead of toasting to the band's appearance on the show they might have had to phone it in... ...

Message from Billie Joe and Adrienne:

Thanks for signing up with Green Day + NRDC, and for everything
you've done so far. It's exciting to have so many people working
with us to stop greedy polluters and short-sighted governments
from destroying our environment.

As a symbol of the work we're doing with NRDC, we designed the
DREAM AND DIFFER dogtag. NRDC had a bunch of them made up, and
they're going to send one out to anyone who donates $10 or
more.

The dogtag is made in the USA from 100% recycled metal. It comes
with a chain, so you can wear it around your neck, and a
keyring, so you can use it as a keychain.

When you make a donation to NRDC, you'll support our work to
slow global warming and Move America Beyond Oil. Go to
https://secure.nrdconline.org/08/greendaydogtag to donate, and
get a DREAM AND DIFFER dogtag.

ADRIENNE'S MESSAGE:

Thank you so much for watching the video and posting such positive comments! I'm so honored to stand among you...together we can all make a difference!

If you have checked greenday.net recently you will have noticed that we spent our "spring break" in New Orleans. Our trip there was really incredible. The people of New Orleans and spirit of the city is spectacular. So it's really heart-wrenching to see how much still needs to be done. That city, all of those people and areas affected by the hurricane, is still living amongst piles of debris, abandoned buildings and damaged homes. And the water marks are still noticeable on many buildings. It's been 2 years! It's unreal. To keep positive, there are so many wonderful people and organizations who are helping out -- unlike the government -- and I know that in our few days there, we helped to change the course for a woman and her daughter. I can't wait to go back again...

Green Day to Cover Legendary Lennon Song

Green Day will contribute a cover of John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" to the forthcoming CD Instant Karma: The Campaign To Save Darfur, proceeds from which help support Amnesty International's campaign to focus attention on the urgent catastrophe in Darfur, Sudan. "Working Class Hero," which appears on Lennon's 1970 album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, is considered one of the former Beatle's most overtly political songs, with its themes of class and social alienation. Green Day - singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tr? Cool - will also shoot an accompanying video for the track.

The single will be released to radio and iTunes on April 30.

The domain name for Green Day's documentary "Heart Like a Hand Grenade" which follows the band as they record AMERICAN IDIOT has been registered: www.HeartLikeAHandGrenade.com by Green Day's management. Does that mean there may be news soon? Stay tuned...

Billie Joe's ADELINE RECORDS is putting out a new CD/DVD from a band called THE NETWORK on September 22nd. Don't miss it, it rocks!

THE NETWORK: Money Money 2020
CD/DVD
AR#028
Astonishingly amazing debut full-length from this exceedingly mysterious new group. THE NETWORK presents an electronic, post-punk experience in sound and fury, with strong robotic and mechanical overtones. Their new-wave futuristic chaos gives nods to the likes of ADAM & THE ANTS, DEVO, PUBLIC IMAGE LTD., and PETER MURPHY. With monikers like The Snoo, Fink, and Van Gogh, THE NETWORK has formed an anomalous synthesis of pop and sarcastic social commentary. This is a record you cannot afford to miss. Also includes a DVD with 6 full-length music videos.

"Well, maybe," says Billie Joe Armstrong with a laugh. "It'll be interesting to see what happens when our new record comes out. It'd be nice to show these kids how it's done. But to tell you the truth, I'd like to take on the garage bands as well. And hell, maybe the metal guys. There's no rule, there's no formula. This is punk rock."

News from Lookout! Records:

Speaking of east bay punks that are now stars, you may have already heard that Lookout! and Green Day have been working on re-releasing both of the band's Lookout! albums. Here are some details - both albums are being re-mastered (supervised by the band) and will sound better than ever; both will be released in new expanded packaging with more pictures, info etc; and there will be enhanced CD features built in to both titles with archival materials from Lookout! and Green Day's vaults. Expect the first revamped re-release, "1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours" which combines the band's first album and vinyl-only EP tracks in late October.

10/21 GREEN DAY    1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours (re-mastered + more) CD
Well, the time has come to tamper with near perfection.  When GREEN DAY recorded and released 39/Smooth in 1990 Lookout didnt even make CDs yet.  When we released the CD we added the 1,000 hours EP and history has since been made.  Finally, all these years later weve re-mastered the tracks, added some awesome live footage and re-worked the art so there arent any charming spelling mistakes.  In early 2004 well be re-releasing
Kerplunk and it will rule too!!

10/21 PINHEAD GUNPOWDER   Compulsive Disclosure CDEP
FINALLY!!  Weve been working on this one for a while. PINHEAD GUNPOWDER , Lookouts most super of super-groups combining members of Green Day, Crimpshrine, Monsula and The Influents has been releasing some low profile EPs over the past few years and they are finally compiled one one easy to play compact disc. We have an MP3 up already so hit their page and stay tuned for more special news.

New album info from the new issue of KERRANG Magazine:

GREEN DAY
TITLE: tbc
Where Does a punk band go when they've released a mellower, quasi-acoustic album, a Greatest Hits package and a collection of B-sides? If you're Green Day, it's back to doing what they do best - recording an album of fine punk tunes. "I feel like the last record ("Warning") is so complete that to try to take over where that one left off would be kind of futile," says bassist, Mike Dirnt. "Right now we're at a really exciting, creative place in our life, so I think that we've had a nice break from making hard and fast music has made us want to do it again. What once was old is now new again."
If that wasn't enough, Green Day have also been working with Iggy Pop on his new album - they appear on three tracks on the Igster's forthcoming opus, due later this year.

"Green Day have started work on their first studio album since 2000's 'Warning'. According to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, the Berkeley trio aren't feeling any pressure to replicate their past success. Says Armstrong "I have a theory that when you get one of there records that sells, like, 10 million, theres only two million people that are paying attention. I'd rather sell 10 CDs and have 10 people getting it and paying attention." We're sure the bands record label feel the same way."

Green Day's "Basket Case" will be featured in a new video game, "BMX XXX" which comes out from Acclaim on November 19th. For more info check out IGN.com.

Speaking of the sound of music, there are 20 licensed tracks, including Saliva's "Click Click Boom" and Green Day's classic "Basket Case." But the more memorable sounds will be the NPCs who chatter at you as you ride around. Many are rude and it seems each NPC has several comments to offer. The game is filled with more uses of the F-word than Thanksgiving with my parents, which is quite a hefty total. But it's not all just "F* this" and "Suck my that," there's plenty of lines without any naughty words at all. But, uh, that doesn't mean they still aren't raw. The favorite so far comes from a sweet little ho who offers this: "Wanna ride me like a bike? I'll sit on your face and pedal your ears."

From Weezer.com:

Today the guys had a day off, but fortuitously, the private first screening of the "Jackass" movie [due out in October] was today, and weezer was invited. The private affair was chock full of interesting characters, including Slash of Guns n Roses, Andrew W.K., Spike Jonze [of course!], Tre Cool of Green Day, and of course the whole Johnny Knoxville-Jackass-CKY clan. Apparently Mtv rented out the Los Feliz area house, whose backyard was ideal for erecting a big movie screen. $13.99 lawn furnature (all pricetags intact) was in place for the screening audience.

New article from Billboard.com:

Up To No Good

Green Day offers a treat to fans and completists this week with the Reprise rarities album "Shenanigans." The 15-track set compiles lesser-heard recordings from the post-"Dookie" phase of the California punk trio's career. The album follows on the heels of last year's greatest-hits set "International Superhits" and includes the unreleased tunes* "DUI" and "Ha Ha You're Dead."

B-sides such as "Rotting," "Don't Wanna Fall in Love," "You Lied," and "Scumbag" are joined by "Espionage," which graced the 1999 Warner Bros. soundtrack to "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me." Also on "Shenanigans" will be covers of songs by the Kinks ("Tired of Waiting for You") and the Ramones ("Outsider"). The latter cut will appear on a Rob Zombie-organized Ramones tribute due this summer from Columbia.

Green Day will be on tour in Europe through late July, after which the band plans to begin work on its next studio album

*DUI is in fact not on the US release, but the Japanese import version.

The Pattern Speak Out @ MuchMusic: here.
As reported by numerous media outlets, including MuchNews, there was a rumour that Oasis had recorded a track under the name The Pattern which appears on Green Day singer Billy Joe Armstrongs compilation CD Every Dog Has Its Day. Well, its not true says the Oasis camp and now MuchNews can verify the same from the real band called The Pattern from Oakland, California. Yes Happy Sarong is my band's song and has nothing to do with Oasis, said The Patterns Christopher Appelgren. The band has no idea how this rumour started and thought it was some joke until they saw the huge retraction. Happy Sarong is by The Pattern, reiterated Appelgren. We're proud of our song. We dig Oasis but don't want to be mistaken for them or them mistaken for us.

Green Day Remembers Dee Dee @ MuchMusic:
The funeral for legend Dee Dee Ramone took place earlier today. The service, which happened at an undisclosed location, included many friends of Dee Dee such as former bandmates Tommy and C.J. Ramone. Dee Dee will not be forgotten, as a show he had planned for Friday in L.A. has now become a tribute night, to be followed on Saturday by a Ramones memorial jam. Proceeds from Saturdays concert will be given to the Dee Dees wife.

We spoke to Billie Joe from Greenday earlier this week about his memories of Dee Dee. After we did the Hall Of Fame thing we were all getting ready to get into the elevator and we grabbed him (Dee Dee) and we were like, hes coming with us, and brought him in and he was like, where are we going? and Im like, were going upstairs to the party, because there was a giant party that was going on upstairs. Then the elevator got stuck so we had to crawl out of the elevator. But I would have been fine getting stuck in the elevator with Dee Dee Ramone any day of the week.

From the current Spin Magazine:

"Monsters of Pop"
Co-headliners Green Day and Blink-182 are bum-rushing the festival season with (with support from Jimmy Eat World) with their April "Pop Disaster" tour. "We wanted to go out early so we don't bump heads with Ozzy Osbourne," said Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. "Plus, it's been a while since we did something eventful, so we're tasting blood right now." Just don't count on any old school Lolla-palooza-style tatoo booths or piercing patlors. Said Armstrong: "That's a little too early-'90s."

Green Day to be on "The New Guy Soundtrack" @ Yahoo: here.

New Guy Soundtrack - Epic Records and Sony Music Soundtrax proudly present music from the upcoming Revolution Studios/Columbia Pictures release The New Guy, a hilarious teen comedy about wiping the slate clean and reinventing yourself. The 14-song soundtrack features a stellar line-up of artists such as Mystikal (``The New Guy''), Juvenile (``Keep The Party Goin'''), Green Day (``Outsider''), Eve 6 (``You Really Got Me'') and Nine Days (``I Love You'')."

There is a blurb in the current Entertainment Weekly Magazine (January 4th) about Green Day's Tre Cool:

Converse-ation

"Never mind the Nikes: Converse Chuck All Stars are the rock & roll sneaker du jour.  The funky footwear has recently been spotted on musicians ranging from Mick Jagger and Geddy Lee to Gwen Stefani and Green Day's Tre Cool.  But perhaps the most notable band to jump on the Chucks-wagon are New York City rockers the Strokes, most of whom are never seen in public sans Cons.  "I pretty much always wear Converse," says Strokes guitarist Nick Valensi.  "I stick with Chucks because they always look right."  Converse's Tish Johnson reports that for their support, the Strokes now receive their sneaks gratis.  Not that the kicks are prohibitively priced.  At $32 (low tops) and $34 (high tops) a pair, any schmo can dress like a rock star."

Actress Amy Brenneman from the hit CBS drama series "Judging Amy," actor Matthew Lillard, musical guest Green Day.

New Launch.com article "Green Day's 'Superhits' Out Tuesday": here.

Green Day drummer Tre Cool tells LAUNCH that the success of at least one of the group's better-known songs surprised him--the title track to their last album. "You know, I liked 'Minority' a lot when we recorded it but I just never even thought of it to be like a single. I was thinking, like, 'Warning,' yeah, sure. Maybe 'Blood, Sex And Booze,' that could have been a good single, 'Macy's Day Parade,' 'Waiting,' you know, it's like we have a lot of singles on that album so it was hard to really pick a single. But then radio started playing 'Minority' and it was huge, it was, like, all over the world. In Japan they're, like, downloading it on their cell phones for their ringers."

International Superhits also includes two new songs, "Maria" and "Poprocks & Coke." Meanwhile, two brand new Green Day songs are now available for streaming at the fan site, GreenDay.net. The unnamed rocker and acoustic ballad were recorded recently on four-track in frontman Billie Joe Armstrong's basement studio.

Green Day Sleeps With Severed Heads @ Launch.com: here

Green Day's Tre Cool has a Halloween he'll never forget. He and his band mates were on tour in Copenhagen, Denmark, which the drummer describes as "kind of an eerie place." The group stayed and the house of a local who then unveiled one of his prized possessions.

Tre tells LAUNCH, "We were getting all stoned and stuff, going to sleep, we were staying on his floor, and he's like, 'I want you to meet my friend.' And he goes to his closet and pulls out of this box a jar with a human head in it, in formaldehyde. It was stolen from the college. And he's like, this is so-and-so. And it was all, like, the skin was peeled away and it was labeled in Danish, like all the parts. Heck a creepy! He left it on the floor and we slept next to it."

Tre adds, "That was a great Halloween."
